Today I had some free time thanks to Olivia’s new pre-pre-school – yay! So naturally I headed to Target like a typical mom and found a fun toddler activity I wanted to share with you all! I grabbed a few things from the dollar spot to make a mini garden, and I think your kiddos will love ringing in Spring by planting their own flowers just like Liv did.

Supplies

Our dollar spot had a decent amount of flower kits to choose from, which is surprising because I feel like it’s usually picked through the day they put new things out! I picked up three types of flowers: cosmos, poppies, and sunflowers. Not being a huge fan of the little planters they include, I found some smaller containers also in the dollar spot. I always feel like it’s a huge score when what I get from there is actually a dollar. Yusssss. 

I tried to find these on Target’s website, but had no luck. Instead, if you’d like to grab a whole kit with a bunch of flowers and other goodies, check this one out from Amazon! It even comes with plant markers – so cute!

The bottoms of these planters had holes, so I simply plugged them up with my hot glue gun. It’ll be easy to remove later on if needed, and provided a perfect seal so water won’t leak through. Alternatively, you can get some cute saucers to put underneath to let the water run through. Your call!

Set-Up

While Olivia was snoozing (during yet another short nap…) I set up everything on the dining table, including a small cup of water and tablespoon.

Planting Time!

This girl. She has turned into such a cheeseball in front of the camera! As soon as I took it out she scream/laughed and gave me a huge authentic smile. I love it! She also was super interested in the what looked like chocolate cookies in front of her… Thankfully she didn’t sneak a bite.

Liv was a natural at dropping in the dirt pucks (I know they have a different “scientific” name but I can’t remember…), but then it was time to add the water. Girl had a major freakout when I told her she could only pour in one tablespoon. But hey, I’ll take one meltdown over ten anyday.

It was actually really cool to watch the pucks turn into little mountains of dirt! Liv was also impressed for about .00004 seconds, then moved on to the seen packets.

When the instructions tell you to put no more than 5 seeds on top… Yeahhhhh right. Liv dumped probably 20 poppy seeds in one, so we’ll see how that goes! Mom had to step in to help arrange some of the seeds correctly and gently push them into the soil. Then we added a bit more water and set our new mini garden in the sunniest window to grow!

This is their temporary resting place until I can find a cute solution for them in our sitting room. It’s going to be so fun for Olivia to watch them grow! And I hope she feels a sense of accomplishment that she grew some “sowers” (her current pronunciation of flowers) from seeds. So go grab some from your local Target (or order the kit from Amazon!) and have some fun creating a mini garden with your toddlers!
